Christmas Field Test Update

December 23, 2009

Go. Get your update.

Merry Happy Ho-Ho, people!

For those following my Road To Templecon series, the important change is that Dahlia lost Entrancing Rhythm – no more debuffing opposing warbeasts – but picked up Mist Walker.

This is really interesting. On the one hand, no more offensive utility, no more walking her into opposing warbeasts and denying them the ability to charge and making them easier to hit…

… on the other hand, she’s no longer sitting with half of her spell list being useless against Warmachine opponents. Instead, she has a utility spell than can help Skarath get into range to unleash his corrosive spray easier, and assuming she can trigger Prowl, she’s no longer under threat of just being shot from  more than 8″ away, circumventing her Haunting Melody. This makes her a more effective unkillable roadblock, wandering around and stopping key opposing units from receiving orders.

This, my dear fellow Lost, will need testing.

The Road To Templecon: Rahn vs pHoarluk

December 23, 2009

It’s almost Christmas. The tree’s up, the kids are excited, and gosh-darn it if thehouse doesn’t smell like Gdaysheila’s been baking something nummy… but you know, Monday night at the FLGS, local Bloodgorger (so titled cos he plays Cryx and Trolls) and superpainter (so titled cos he’s a talented lad with a brush) Brendan (TheGreatGaspy) inadvertently, and in spite of his own efforts, gave me an early Christmas gift (this paragraph needs more notes in brackets) and let me achieve my first victory in playtesting for Adeptis Rahn.

My list:

Adeptis Rahn
- Phoenix
House Shyeel Battle Mages
Dawnguard Sentinels (6) + UA + Soulless
House Shyeel Magister
Arcanist

The Road To Templecon: Junior Mittens

December 22, 2009

The road is long, with many a winding turn… and a bunch of dudes who are really dedicated to protecting their manicures. Took me longer than I’d planned, but lo and behold the House Shyeel Battle Mages are completed.

Seriously, dude, they were THIS BIG!

Done…Finally…The Blessing of Break Time…aka BoBT

December 21, 2009

I am no major painter.  I love this hobby for the painting and the game.  The modeling is sorta secondary for me…unless I get inspired to do a conversion.  To that end, here is the biggest conversion I have attempted to date.  The inspiration was that a Dervish (the hardest working light in MkII) had just finished boxing an Argus.  It had finally taken out body arm of it’s life spiral, and sits down on it’s quarry to consider his victory…and let his boiler cool down a bit.

Ladies and Gentlemen…The Blessing of Break Time:

Feewwww....That Argus was tough as nails!

My what shiny teeth you have...er...had...

Baby got back...

Looks like that Argus lost it's movement system...or...Put, the Bone In

I sure hope you like the pictures. I sure had fun making the BoBT and it will be my primary Dervish. Even if he isn’t an official character jack…he can Take 5 for me any time!

The Road to Templecon: Snakes on a plain

December 20, 2009

As I’m sure many of you are aware, Clayton (of Iron Kingdoms Aventures) and I lined up a 35 pt test game on Vassal. I was originally going to run a list pretty much along the lines of the one I ran last Monday night (see the last Road To Templecon update), but at the last minute I felt whimsical and thought to myself, self, I thought, why don’t you goof around with some new stuff? Well, I was so darn persuasive with that argument, that I put together a list with a bunch of models I’d been considering but never played before:

Rahn
- Phoenix
Arcanist
Magisters (2)
Snipers (2)
Eiryss
Narn
Dahlia/Skarath
Stormfall
Nayl

Hammercon: Always Remember Anti-magic Pulse!

December 19, 2009

ultimate58As this was my first Con I didn’t really know what to expect. It was pretty cool seeing all the dressed up people and the displays that many vendors had. It was by no means a large convention but it was nice to get myself into one before going to something like Templecon. Anyways I was here to do some hardcore Warmachining, so let’s get to the action!

Game 1

First game was against Scott B. We have played against each other in just about every tournament so I wasn’t really surprised to see him across the table from me. We always have close, competitive games so I knew this was gonna be a grind. He was playing a melee heavy Khador army led by Sorscha.

TempleCon Ho! – Playtest for State of the Art

December 18, 2009

When I wrote my latest post, about my panic around my list making for TempleCon, I had NO idea I would strike such a chord.  I have never written a post for Lost Hemisphere or for my old blog Getting Small that got such a response.  I must admit that I was pretty freaked out when eSevi folded like a house of cards.  I needed a confidence boost.  My primary list for TempleCon is an eFeora list.  One that, frankly, I expect to see from other people.  I also really like 50 pts better than 35 pts, since it gives me much more flexibility to field different tools.

I felt like my eFeora list was uniquely qualified to take on Legion.  Here is my list so you can understand why I feel this way?

Epic Feora

Don't hate me because I am beautiful...hate me because I just flamed you from 10" away...

Hierophant

Vanquisher

Redeemer (bonded)

Avatar

Bastions (5)

Vilmon

Choir (6)

Covenant

Rhovan and His Exemplar Honor Guard

Vassal (2)

Eiryss or Alten?

December 18, 2009

ultimate58

NB: This article was written prior to Hammercon09, and is posted as an example of Paul’s list-building process.

Hammercon is coming up and I need to get my lists straight so I can practice with them. The grand prize is a sizable Retribution force and would be a great start to any army. With this in mind I really had to bring my A game to the con. This means either Menoth or Legion. With the success I had with Idrians the last tournament I played Menoth I realized they were my go to guys. When they worked my opponents had fits over them.

The List

This was a 500 point SR4 tournament so epics were out of the question. That leaves me with one really competitive caster that is head and shoulders above everyone else at that level, Kreoss. The feat is the assassination tool, anti-magic pulse helps to get rid of enemy defensive upkeeps on feat turn, Lamentation is just a huge pain to deal with and Protection of Menoth makes any unit much harder to kill. He’s got other spells but those are the ones I use every game.

The Road To Templecon: Stabby Meatshields

December 17, 2009

Testing (slowly) continues for Rahn as I try to nut out a list for Templecon. Monday night, I had the pleasure of squaring off against Tom Kusch (TK421 on PP’s forums, Snake Eyes on HK’s forums) and his Skorne. For once I played against an army that can’t completley negate Stealth…

I’ve been struggling to finalise an escalating list, from 25 to 75 points (with two warcasters in the 75 list) so that I can focus my painting efforts in order to get to fully painted status for the lists I intend to field. This means that stuff’s getting thrown in and out of lists with wanton abandon, and I’m trying to find my balance between melee, range and magic stuff, between infantry and jacks.

My list du jour:

Adeptis “Bigjobs” Rahn
Phoenix
Hydra
Narn
Arcanist
Mage Hunter Assassin
House Shyeel Magister
House Shyeel Battle Mages (6)
Dawnguard Sentinels
+ Officer & Standard
+ Soulless

My worthy opponent fielded (assuming I haven’t forgotten anything):

Lord Tyrant Hexeris
Titan Cannoneer
Cylcops Brute
Rhinodon
Praetorian Swordsmen
+ Officer & Standard
Paingiver Beast Handlers
Ancestral Guardian
Bloodrunner Master Tormentor
Tyrant Commander & Standard

HK’s Secret Santa Paint Exchange ‘09

December 16, 2009

One of the joys of playing at one of the awesomest FLGS’ this side of the Pecos, and being part of a playgroup full of players that are more awesome than some things that are quite awesome, is that when I yell “Hey! Who wants to do a Secret Santa painting exchange?”, I get results like this:

So here’s the drill: Everyone gave me something they wanted painted. I then randomly distributed models among the participants. Everyone had three weeks to paint the models, and return them to the store, under threat of losing the model painted for them, and a subtle combination of derision and leg-breaking from the other participants.*

Behold, the end results!
