Summer daze

August 18, 2008

One of the joys of working for a larger company is larger events. This year’s “summer family event” was at Ontario Place, which is currently hosting a chinese lantern festival.

We watched a dinosaur film on IMAX, we went on a ferris wheel, we did all sorts of shenanigans that one does with little kids… the most notable of which was playing in the Atom Blaster, a large play area filled with foam balls and air cannons! Everywhere you turned there were spots to put the balls, and then they’d shoot out somewhere else. You could load, like, 40 of them into this one cannon and then fire them all over the main floor. Twas a hoot.

"And we were sitting in front of this lion thingie, and I kid you not, it was THIS BIG!"

Naturally, as a proud dad, I’m just using all of this as an excuse to show you pics of my kids. Sure, it’s got nothing to do with VS or the Summer of Love, but what the smeg. Who’s gonna stop me? YOU??? MWAHAHAHAH! Read the rest of this entry ?

Cold shoulder for Cold Storage?

August 3, 2008

There’s been some discussion over at VSRealms lately regarding the value of Cold Storage. Is the card worth it? Does it have any real value? Can it make enough of a difference in a deck to make it worth playing?

Personally, I think so. Sure, it’s a kill-turn card, but no matter how you want to look at it, it saves you a character. Yes, at the cost of a resource, but if it’s your kill turn, what good’s that extra resource point going to do you anyway?

One point of the argument is that it brings the character back exhausted - no additional attacks, no exhausting to reinforce - the character’s just another body on the field now, but…

… what about using it do dodge uniqueness? Do it during the recovery phase and you’ll be down a resource for next turn but you’ll have two ready characters.

… what about using it to being back excellent defenders like the MODOC Squad to defend a critical character so that you can strike back when your attack step rolls around?

… and the one that seems most pertinent to me, what about those Leader effects? You don’t need to be ready to give a neighbouring character the benefit of Leader text, you just need to be there.

Anyone remember 1967?

July 21, 2008

Picture it.

The Spectre Vol 1, Not Brand Echh, even Timmy the Timid Ghost are sitting on the stands.

… DC’s faceless objectivist, The Question, is introduced.
… We see Batman sell out  with a grand Bat-Auction.
… Plastic Man takes on Dr Dome’s Dame of Doom.
… Hercules hooks up with the Avengers for the first time.
… Marvel’s original Tarantula, Clay Riley, crosses paths with Ghost Rider.
… Dell Comics gave us their Fab Four (Polymer Polly? Seriously?)

Oh… and Gorilla Grodd fell in love in Flash #127

What does this, the Summer of Love, have to do with… well… anything?

Stay tuned, Fellow Lost. Big things are a-comin’.

Quiet contemplation

July 16, 2008

Real life (yes, it’s not just a rumour) has dumped a metric craptonne of stuff on my lap that has to be resolved over the next few days, so regrettably I’m not going to be able to make any obscenely wordy posts probably until the weekend at the earliest. This may also result in a delay on the conclusion of this week’s caption contest, and it most certainly rules out a Thursday Thirteen from me this week.

I suggest you take this time to look within yourselves and to quietly contemplate the mysteries of the universe - Why are we here? Why do rainbows curve? Is it conceivable to make a deck that can actually utilise Starlord?

On my return I do promise a Family Feud match, and the announcement of a new contest of some sort to get your creativity flowing.

Fizzle…

July 13, 2008

No, not the plot twist, but rather, an eight-legged cat thingie that can split into four felines… according to Blockade Boy, at least ;)

One of the joys of teh modern interwebs is strolling through random blogs and seeing what eventuates. I sporadically visit Blockade Boy’s blog, and was entertained by the inception of these creatures. In particular, the description of Fizzle brought to mind Spud’s frequent reliance on drunken hobos.

Say “hi” to Fizzle! Fizzle Aqua has mind-control powers, so you don’t even have to bother with buying food or changing the litter box. That’s what the zombie hobos are for. Fizzle Yellow shoots lighting! (Surge protector sold separately.) Fizzle Pink can walk through walls and fall through floors! And not onto your table in the middle of important meetings with your press agent! Nope! Fizzle Purple has super-speed! Try putting Fizzle Purple on a treadmill hooked up to a generator, and watch your power bills plummet!

O Canada

July 1, 2008

To all those who’ve taken me in here in the great white North (well, white for several months of the year at least), Happy Canada Day!

To all the comic geeks, celebrate Canada Day with a trip to AlphaFlight.net, and marvel that the only member to be on the roster for every incarnation isn’t the dude with the maple leaf jumpsuit, but rather the big, hairy orange one.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Spore: Creating life

June 28, 2008

I have to do something to help me get through the weekend while all of my peers are at Worlds, right? Well, always being amused by character generators and the like, I downloaded the Spore Creature Creator and came up with a few nifty little improbable beings of my own.

Naturally, I’ve decided to share some of them with you. I’m a generous soul like that.

The Stripicore was the first of my creations, and I still think it’s pretty nifty.

A carnivore, its primary defenses are the talons on its forelimbs and the spike-firing tail (hence the name… stripey manticore, which when shortened becomes stripicore… whatever).

It’s fairly short, but I just liked the way it all came together.
