… of mice and men… yadda yadda something or other.
We had built a bunch of decks and were planning on getting stuck into some of the Summer Of Love games tonight along with a Coming Of Galactus run, but our plans were disrupted by…
NEW PLAYERS!
Reinforcing my opinion that we need Legend-style decks similar to the WoW starters to help get new players into the game, two lads picked up Hobby Kingdom’s last Hellboy EC, took a deck each, and threw down.

Hobby League tonight, and we’re running the BYOT event with the Geektastic Fin Fang Foom mat on the line.
Spud has been whining since the event was announced in an effort to dissuade me from playing Darkseid, because resource control makes him cry; I’m a fair man, and there’s only so much blubbering I can take, so I looked at my options.
I do so enjoy Kree Resource Control; Carrbear needed some of my Spider-Friends stuff for her deck, so I eschewed them. Inhumans? Defenders? Morlocks?
In the end it came down to either Fantastic Four, who I tend to play whenever i get the chance, Crime Lords, for whom I have two builds I just can’t decide between, and Marvel Knights, who are just generally solid.
In the end MKKO won out, loaded with pumps (Savage Beatdown, Big Leagues, Blinding Rage, Crime and Punishment - playsets of each), tutors (Wild Ride, Mobilize), and KO effects (Quick Kill and Judge, Jury and Executioner).

… because apparently taking the gdaykids to the circus is more important than playing cards. Who knew!!!
If nothing else, here’s a blurry taken-with-my-camera-phone picture of the performing horses, all six of whom had little feathery wings… I will say I was proud of my little gdaygirl when she yelled “Pegasuses!”. Naturally, I had to fight the inclination to correct her grammar, just for the sake of allowing her to enjoy the fantasy.

- They may not be pink unicorns, but I hope Stu likes it regardless

We had planned to play Dual Legend decks tonight, with a moritorium on Family of Four, Worlds Finest, and other such “designed to be” dual legend legal decks, but things being as they are, we were promptly derailed by the arrival of young Liam, who turned up hoping to play some LotR (the miniatures game by Games Workshop).
Never the type to let an oppotunity slip through our fingers, we pounced on this poor unsuspecting lad and promptly began his corruption by tossing an Avengers team attack deck into his grubby little mitts.
it was interesting comparing tutorial styles, as I played him (while Spud and Pablo played), then Pablo played him (while Spud and I played), and then Spud played him (while Pablo and I played).
Needless to say, handing a neophyte player a Warbound control deck is not a good thing, even if he DOES say Hulk is his favourite character. Hopefully Spud has learned his lesson :).
During the week I’m going to toss together a care package for our budding new cardflopper, and we’ll see if he turns up next week ready to take us on again.

… because, clearly, I didn’t give you enough with last night’s post.
I’m sure you’ve clued in by now that Pablo, Spud and I are the core three members of our Hobby League, and it’s not uncommon for us to play three-player free-for-alls.
Last night, we saw my MUN Avengers vs Spud’s Warbound Hulk vs Pablo’s Multi-Magneto’s.
Two factors made this game a delight.

We were going to play some Super Crossover Sealed tonight, but ended up playing some three-player shenanigans because, well, that’s the kind of malarkey that Spud, Pablo and I get up to.
While we’re patiently waiting for the BYOT kit to turn up, it’s no surprise that our thoughts start to drift towards just what we can play. For myself, this isn’t such a big deal because, well, almost every deck I build is BYOT legal. I rarely toolbox, I occasionally team up, but I’d say 80-90% of my decks are mono-affiliated and rely heavilly on their stamped stuff.
That’s just how I roll.

Opened my last box today - nothing but singles and boosters for me from here on in - and holy toledo, it was a close fight, but it looks like Cap wins another box.
This was by far the closest box I’ve seen. Both Cap boosters and Iron Man boosters were spitting out some superb stuff, no less than 19 rares that I actually wanted for playsets, and some bloody superb trade bait…

I’ve made no secret in the past of Spud’s skill at this game. He’s a better deckbuilder than I am, he’s a better drafter than I am, he’s a better player than I am.*
In the end though, even the mighty can be toppled by a single brain fart. By that, I mean a single moment when your brain suddenly interrupts whatever it was doing, whatever thought processes it may have been firing across your cerebral synapses, and instead just lets out a stinky “poot”.
Tonight, we were playing three-player sealed. Spud, myself, and the Eponymous Pablo.
A few turns into the game, Spud has a few options, but chooses to recruit Cloak.

Now, Cloak’s not a bad choice. He’s got decent stats for a 2-drop, and a boost ability that lets you remove a reinforcer or blocker out of the way to allow you to smash into weaker character (or even directly to the face.
Spud opts to recruit Cloak visible…
Pays the boost…
And uses it to move Cloak to the hidden area.
…
Look at the card. Seriously, look at it for a minute, and you’ll see why this had Pablo and I boggling.

You know, I won’t waste your time with meandering mumbles about the mediocre deck I slapped together… I’ll just show you a pair of foils that came in my packs, and be done with it. Excuse the pic quality, it was taken with that teensy little camera in my cell phone…

by Captain Spud
At last night’s Hobby League, we played Deck Roulette– each player brought three decks, which were put in the middle of the table and randomly assigned to a player each round. We intended to do standard games, but since Carrie and Gamerette couldn’t come this week, it was just me, Gday, and the Eponymous Pablo. Rather than giving someone a bye every round, we just shrugged and decided to do 3-player games.
