The Most Fun I have Ever Had Playing Warmachine…

July 22, 2009

Last Wednesday night was something special at the good old FLGS.  This was our first week with our official new press ganger PG_TheGreatBlah of Trollblood Scrum! blog.  Our group decided to take a page out of the St. Louis communities experiments with alternative game formats.  We chose to go after a 1-1-1-1 game…only we played it sligtly different.

For those of you unfamiliar with 1-1-1-1, it really is quite simple.  You pick one warcaster / lock, one beast/jack, one unit, and one solo.  They have to add up to 350 or less points.  The 350 really keeps it balanced.  If you don’t set a common point level to build to, it unbalances the factions something fierce.  That being said…we took some “liberties” with the basic rules.

I Went to a Concert and Came Home a Dirty Hippie…

July 20, 2009

One of the best parts of moving from Minne-noplace to Utah was getting the chance to see The Dead at The Gorge in George, Washington.  The Gorge ranks up there with Red Rocks in Colorado as one of the premier concert venues in the world.  The view is spectacular, and the acoustics are amazing.  I had never seen The Dead, and my wife turned me on to them when we got married back in 2004.

So we loaded up the gas guzzling SUV, the three year old, and headed NW to George.  George is in sort of that God forsaken part of Washington where the rain never quite gets to due to the Cascade Mountains.  I came home a true believer.  The Dead were amazing.  The Doobie Brothers were amazing.  The Allman Brothers were…ok…but I was never a big fan.

So what does this little slice of life have to do with Warmachine…plenty…you see…I am now a three faction player.  Hi…my name is MenothJohn…and I have a problem.

Risk vs Reward: The Ponies

July 19, 2009

We recently had the release celebration tourney thingie for L5R’s Celestial Edition. This meant new starter decks for every faction, the possibility to have decks purely assembled from cards with the new layout, and for me, a quandary.

After chatting with an eminently wise online pal (Hi Eric!) concerning my options, I decided to eschew the potentially more tricksy Mantis in favour of the more straightforwardly smashy Unicorn. This was in no way a reflection of Mantis’ potential in a sealed format (in fact, they won in the end – I was denied the chance to smash them by an arbitrary cut thanks to tied records (*shakes fist*)), but rather a reflection of my own unfamiliarity with the Celestial incarnation of my favourite clan. Much of the Naval, Ranged and Magistrate themes, in favour of scouts and followers and the like.

Unicorn, regardless of whatever else changed about them, still has ponies… and ponies are pretty darn awesome in a sealed format.

This led to the risk vs reward quandary. Two new Strongholds. This is a whole new set, full of cards I’m unfamiliar with. I hadn’t had time to look into potential synergies, to evaluate just which of the two would be the best for me to run with.

Duh Duh Duh Duh Duh

“Hi everyone I’m Glompinmuckinstuck!”

“And I’m Hurlewpooonshew, welcoming you to the second match of our King of the Mountain Mayhem!”

“The weather today is Hot and Stinky.”

“Ya it’s going to be a real tough match for our teams and they’re going to want to get to the high ground as soon as possible.”

“I agree Hurly I think there’s going to be a mad dash to the centre to get out of that smoggy ground fog.”

“Let’s take a look at our competing teams today Glomp.”

merclogo“Well Hurly our first team is captained by Magnus the Traitor who’s a mean SOB with a pretty big chip on his shoulder!”

“Who wouldn’t be when you’ve been through what he’s been through.”

legionlogo“Very true Hurly. Our next team hails from near Khador country. Vayl is so cold hearted she makes a block of ice seem like a warm comfy blanket. Many people find being in her preasence very unpleasent.”

“And don’t forget to mention her beasts whom many have complained about their Diva like behaviour on this tour.”

khadorlogo“Our third team this match also Hails from the icy north of Khador. No one is quit sure how old the Old Witch is but she is certainly a fan favorite on this circuit and would be a favourite to win today.”

cygnarlogo“You’ve got that right Glomp! Our last team is from the embattled realm of Cygnar and Captained by Siege. While reletively new to the circuit Siege has proven himself a very capable team leader.”

“Alright the match is ready to begin. Let’s take you down to the field.”

Regrets on a Girl the Floats – Part 3…The Last

July 15, 2009

And now we get to the sad part in the saga.  In spite of taking it on the chin in my last game, I had lost to a great player and frankly, the guy most likely to win the tournament.  I could still get second place…if only I could get past my old nemesis Adam and his Khador.

No small task, but I liked my chances honestly.

It had not dawned on me, to this point, how badly I was going to miss my little buddy the Devout.  I was facing eSorcha.  I was actually kind of excited about it.  The scuttlebutt was that she wasn’t nearly the caster that here prime form was.  I was excited as heck to be facing a “weak” Winterguard themed army.  I thought, I can beat that be-otch and get second place…all thanks to my floating pre-pubescent voice of the Creator.

Why I haven’t got any painting done this week

July 14, 2009

I haven’t put any paint on the Dire Troll Blitzer in days. I got my hands on the new Celestial Edition L5R stuff last week, haven’t even started looking at the Mantis stuff. Heck, aside from prepping this week’s King of the Mountain posts, I haven’t managed to complete anything I’d hoped to accomplish…

… all because of a little release for the PC…

bb410

One of the reasons I’m so hyped for Grind is that I was a big fan of Blood Bowl back in the day. It seems my old favourite board game’s available on the PC now, so the timesink has begun.

My only disappointment is that all the teams aren’t represented, though apparently the code’s already in there for the absent Dark Elves and Undead, so it’s just a matter of them releasing an expansion. Then we just need Norse, Amazons, Vampires, Chaos Dwarves and Halflings and we’ll be in good stead :)

I’m willing to live with clunky menus and poor load times for a good translation of my favourite board game (to be dethroned by Grind later this year, but for now…)

Until then, the formation of an online league for players at my FLGS is looking to further interfere with any painting I may have planned… though first I have to decide what team to play, since apparently I’m not allowed to play my beloved Bifrost Guardians… :)

Boom Boom Pow – the Mk II Sunburst

July 13, 2009

Alright, so it’s beating a dead horse, but I think I have to express my love for the Mk II Sunburst once more.

I expounded back during the Menoth’s Least Wanted series on the Mk I Sunburst, and my opinion that it isn’t the complete and total pile of dog poop that many seem to think it is. I acknowledge that it’s not an auto include, but I’ve always held that a pow 16 at 14″ range has its uses…

The Mk II Sunburst, as at the field test stage:

Has a base move of 5, rather than 1 + 2″ per crewman. This is significant because it means you can lose a grunt without sacrificing what limited mobility you have. Speaking of which…

While the Sunburst can’t charge, it can now run. You still can’t move and shoot, but you can now actually make it to that hillock to set up your firebase on the first turn. With your 10″ setup zone, this means that under optimal conditions you can make it 20″ across a 48″ board, establishing a section of the board where even heavy warjacks will be taking damage on less than average rolls. Heck, boxcars on the Sunburst will completely overload a Myrmidon’s forcefield in a single shot.
