We recently had the release celebration tourney thingie for L5R’s Celestial Edition. This meant new starter decks for every faction, the possibility to have decks purely assembled from cards with the new layout, and for me, a quandary.
After chatting with an eminently wise online pal (Hi Eric!) concerning my options, I decided to eschew the potentially more tricksy Mantis in favour of the more straightforwardly smashy Unicorn. This was in no way a reflection of Mantis’ potential in a sealed format (in fact, they won in the end – I was denied the chance to smash them by an arbitrary cut thanks to tied records (*shakes fist*)), but rather a reflection of my own unfamiliarity with the Celestial incarnation of my favourite clan. Much of the Naval, Ranged and Magistrate themes, in favour of scouts and followers and the like.
Unicorn, regardless of whatever else changed about them, still has ponies… and ponies are pretty darn awesome in a sealed format.
This led to the risk vs reward quandary. Two new Strongholds. This is a whole new set, full of cards I’m unfamiliar with. I hadn’t had time to look into potential synergies, to evaluate just which of the two would be the best for me to run with.
