I can haz Bastions!

Look what I got… :P

Okay, other than showing off, let’s take a look at the trials and tribulations of assembling a Bastion, to ease the fears of all of you worry-warts.

First up, you’ll find all your Bastions bagged in a strip, all parts for each model in each pocket.

wrapped

One you’ve cracked one out, you’ll have to spend some time cleaning off mould lines, sprue cutoffs, and just general flash. It’s irksome, but it’s par for the course.

Lay out your bits. be very mindful of the head, since it’s a teeny tiny bit.

bits

You should have a base, a body, two shoulderpads, to arms with great big blocky pegs on ‘em, the glaive, and a tiny little head on a post that twice as long as it is.

Clearly, this is very complicated, and requires a degree in soil science to comprehend.

Jam that sucker into the base.

body

Next, slot the head in to close up that gaping neck wound.

Then the other…

Slap on a shoulder pad…

And finally, clip on the glaive…

And check out its backside, just so’s I have an excuse to post the pic I took.

Now, I confess that I had difficulty getting the glaive to sit happily – the hands aren’t quite lining up with the wrist sockets on both arms. I’m led to believe (by a pal who’s assembled all 5 of his) that this was a problem on two of the models and not on the other three, so I may just have opened one of the misaligned ones as my demo model.

… and yes, before anyone asks, the glaive is straight – it’s not a issue of a bent haft.

I will point out, though, that the rest of the pieces fit so well and snuggly that I’d feel comfortable forgoing glue – the fits are that cosy, that snug.

I’ve dealt with a lot of plastic models in my day, and I have to say that with the exception of that glaive-fitting issue, this is one of the finest plastic models I’ve had the joy of assembling.

The fits are beautiful (again, with the exception of the glaive on this model), the assembly’s highly intuitive – seriously, a Whelp could do it – and cleanup on the model’s not too time consuming.

I’m looking forward to painting these lads up once I can make room for them on the painting schedule. In the interim, I definitely recommend these models for any defenders of the True Law out there.

  1. SHINY :)

One of the reasons i was tempted by menoth as my <cough 3rd faction

  2. I had the same problem with the glaive on that exact same model. I found that by making the hole in the gloved glaive hand bigger I was able to get a good firm fit (the problem as I found was that the hole and peg where not the same shape, that was causing the slippage)

  3. Are these guys made out of the same plastic as GW models? They look like they may have a little mould release on them or something. Let us know how they take the paint, I’m curious.

  4. According to the NQ article, it’s a different plastic that polystyrene cement won’t work on. They’re not on my painting docket just yet, but you can bet once I’ve got them done that they’ll be showcased here :)

  5. I knew my degree in soil engineering was good for something :P

Great write up, I’m really looking forward to getting these guys.

  6. You lucky bastard. I have to wait until next week for mine.

They look good, very, very good.

Will make it difficult for me to stick to playing Mercs over the summer. ;)

  7. I am tremendously jealous at this point. We have the PAX qualifier coming up and I wish the Bastions had released earlier this month so I could bring the pain this Saturday.

Glad to hear that I should have no problems assembling these guys, and I will have 2 units of them.

    Thanks!
