Naughty By Nature vs Subjugation

by Kyle

I was originally supposed to play Joe and his very scary Cryx for my first round of WarmaHordes fun. Life stepped in unfortunately and Joe could no longer participate in the Challenge. Scott offered to step into Joe’s position. Here is the recounting of our 350 point battle fought over a creepy cabin in the woods.

We randomly rolled for a scenario from week two of the Retaliation of the Wilds tour, ‘Cabin Fever’.

The goal of ‘Cabin Fever’ is to be in control of the cabin at the centre of the table by getting your models in close to the cabin while your opponent does not have models close to it. Careful though not to get your models too close or they will go berserk and try and kill each other. Think of The Shining – ‘red rum’, ‘Herrrrre’s Johny!’

Scott won the initiative roll and decided that I would set up and go first.

Circle Turn 1

Morvahna casts two spells, ‘Regrowth’ on the Reeves and ‘Harvest’ both of which are upkeep spells. Regrowth allows Morvahna to bring back models to the unit if they are destroyed. Harvest allows Morvahna to get fury points whenever an enemy model is destroyed in her control area. Morvahna is all about upkeep spells.

Knowing that the Cyclops Shaman can dispel upkeeps, Morvhana orders the Tharn Bloodtrackers Hunt down and destroy the Cyclops Shaman. Choosing the Shaman as their ‘prey’ the Bloodtrackers run forward into a flanking position. The Warp Wolf, the Reeves, and the War Wolf, all run forward.

Skorne Turn 1

Lord Tyrant Hexeris casts ‘Death March’ on the Praetorian Swordsmen and advances forward. Death March will allow the Swordsmen one final retributive stirke should any of them be killed. Needing Fury to leech on the next turn The Cyclops Savage is riled. All other models on the Skorne side run forward, with the Praetorians splitting off from the rest of the army in a flanking manuver.

Circle Turn 2

First Morvahna Leeches fury from the Warp Wolf and cuts herself for three damge ensuring she is full of Fury. She upkeeps her spells. The Shifting Stones teleport Morvhana forward. Now time to poke out that Shamans eye – Mwaa Ha Ha! The Bloodtrackers charge forward, throwing their spears!

2011

Miss Agh! The Shaman gets to retreat one inch because he was missed (one of his special rules). The remaining spears fall short. That did not go well. The Reeves advance forward and take aim at the Shaman. The Shaman is out of range because of his retreat and only one Reeve has a shot. I only need one model to hit allowing the War Wolf a free charge against the Shaman. Even if the wolf is out of range he can attempt another charge on his own activation.

2012

Agh!! Not again! Gaaa!

Morvahna casts Revivify on the Stones. While the Warpwolf moves in behind the building.

Skorne Turn 2

Hexeris leeches his fury and upkeeps Death March on the Praetorian Swordsman. The Cyclops Shaman decides it’s time to get rid of those pesky Reeves. First the Shaman uses its animus getting rid of the upkeep spell on them. Morvahna can no longer regrow any models in the unit that are killed. To add to the insult the Shaman kills one of the Reeves with his ‘Evil Eye’. Bye bye Reeve.

Hexeris advances towards and casts Death Bringer on the Bloodtrackers annihalating all but one! The War Wolf escapes Death Bringer with not even a scratch only to be cloven in two by an angry Cyclops Savage. Orin hits and destroys two Reeves with a single Lightning Stroke. Having taken Mass Casualties the Reeves make and ,foolishly, pass their command check. They stand undaunted in the face of certain death!

… Which comes for one immediately in the form of the Drakes ‘Withering Gaze’. The Praetorians continue their advance around the far side of the building.

A good turn for Skorne. A very bad turn for Circle.

Circle Turn 3

The lone fleeing Bloodtracker runs past Morvahna whom tells her to ‘get back in the fight’! The poor Bloodtracker obeys. Morvahna leeches fury and upkeeps Harvest and Revivify. Morvahna moves to the corner of the cabin. She has positioned herself just right. Needing only four of her five fury to cast ‘Eruption of Life’.

Mouth hangs open in disbelief.

The plan was to kill three Praetorians. That would have given Morvahna, with her Harvest spell, enough fury to cast Eruption of life again. Sigh not today. The shifting stones teleport into a defensive position around Morvahna. The WarpWolf charges forward trampling three Praetorians. Miraculously he survives all of the retributive strikes from Death March but is left very badly wounded.

Skorne Turn 3

This is it. The Circle is in shambles. Time for the killing stroke. The Cyclops savage charges the last Bloodtracker and misses! But wait, the Savage can retroactively boost to hit, and he does! Splat. The Shaman gives the ‘Evil Eye’ to the last Reeve. Splat. Needless to say the Reeve didn’t ’see’ it comeing.

Orin Midwinter sends a bolt of Lightning into the one shifting stone which then arcs to Morvahna and the other two stones. Hexeris casts the suffering on the Warp wolf which will force it to make a threshold check in the next turn or Frenzy. Fortunately for the humiliated Circle there is no next turn as the Basilisk Drake finishes off Morvahna with the ‘Withering Gaze’.
