Gauntlet V: Old Flames

September 21, 2008

This is the fifth gauntlet. Do I need to keep explaining what they’re about? Heh… Each week, I present a challenge for Aaron “Onyxweapon” Mead – something to keep his brain roiling. Of course, anyone’s welcome to take up the gauntlet and post your findings… but Aaron faces dire consequences indeed, should he fail.

I’ve had a love affair with small cardboard rectangles for a few years now. My wife, bless her, has come to terms with it. She knows that VS System is a part of my life.

Personally, I blame it all on discovering the high level of satisfaction that can only be achieved by burning your opponent for over 30 END in a single turn thanks to Human Torch: Hotshot, some Advanced Hardwares, and a playset of Cosmic Radiations.

Flaming Buns o' Flame!

Flaming Buns!

With the advent of the Clone Saga format, I’ve had my head full of ideas. Captain America may be leading the charge, but in the back of my mind I remember those heady days of flame. I find myself wondering, just how fast can I metaphorically burn my opponent out in Silver nowadays?

The challenge is on!

Alright, Clone Saga format rules are in effect – Silver Age, Uniqueness is for wusses. How fast can you turn your opponent into a pile of ashes using a Human Torch centric deck? Doesn’t have to be through direct burn, but does have to have Johnny Stormy goodness.

Succeed, and yet another Sunday spot on LH will be yours. Succeed with a reasonably reliable kill before Omnipotence hits the board on turn five, and I’ll bring you’ll receive an EA Human Torch: Supernova. It’s only appropriate. Fail, and Cliff gets to lick your head in November. If he wants to, of course. No fair shampooing with haggis prior to the event as a precautionary measure.

Answering the Call: Deep Blue Sea

September 21, 2008

It’s a day of double-awesomeness. Not only has Chris Sims posted the entries for his outstanding Batman Nunchuks contest, but once again Aaron’s actually managed to some up with something that met with the Dark Water challenge! Yay! Enjoy – Gday

The deep blue challenge really tickled my… fancy. And with a draft screen on the line, keeping the character count below 10 was exactl the kind of challenge my twisted mind feeds on. I experimented with a Dr. Doom base hoping to abuse Lust for Power, but found the KO cost just too high to justify, especially with a 9 character max. Sure i could have played it dirty and gone for an 80 card deck with a full curve of characters and search, but I felt that was not in the spirit of the challenge.

So what did that leave me?
