Lazy hazy Saturdays…

September 20, 2008

Alright, so not that lazy – I’m on Dad Duty for the day, after all – but there’s still room for some relaxation, fun, and game-related goodness.

Three things to natter at you about today. Mini-decks, that fresh pack smell, and Board Game Day at the Hobby Kingdom.

First, I offer my sincerest condolences to LizardLightning. We played our match for the mini-deck tournament; my Crime Lords/Skrulls (as blabbed about here) vs his Sinister Syndicate rush deck.

When you’re playing SinSyn rush, it’s really quite a very sucky thing when you have nothing but a handful of blue on turns 3 AND four. Despite beating me to the face for the first couple of turns, and Vulture eating Albert Malik fueled by the Lion’s Den and Crime & Punishment for a great return in Endurance gain, being unable to build up a decent board presence meant that the Syndicate never really go their act together, while the Crime Lords were out in good order – Hand Ninjas, Albert Malik, Master Man, Elektra, and then on turn six Captain AmeriSkrull and Spider-Girl to make up the points.

Even though I was on 16 END, a 31 pt swing to the face after the Hand and Spider-Girl had stunned LizardLightning’s board put him on -20.

Good game, but bad beats.

Second, buy more MUN. I was in the Hobby Kingdom today for an event (to be detailed in the third point) and picked up a couple of packs on spec. Wolverine: Secret Avenger, Punisher: Captain America, and a foil Avengers Assembled. That’s a good feeling, right there.

Third, Board Game Day at the Hobby Kingdom!!!

HK regularly has event days, which tend to condincide organised play of some sort, with massive discounts on stuff. I couldn’t play in anything (Gdaysheila’s working today, I’m on Dad Duty, yadda yadda yadda) but I did duck in with the camera to snap a few shots for your viewing pleasure.

Talisman normally sells for $40+ … on sale for $15?? I used to love this game back in the day, though I mourn the removal of miniatures in favour of little cardboard dudes. I liked the minis :(

The boys get rolling with Axis & Allies

The UK player was particularly well organised

A game of Carcassone in the early stages. That’s Hank Raab on the left!

Arkham Horror… I was too nervous to approach any closer.

Railway Tycoon – Rails of Europe, and a couple of random beverages.

Misson: Red Planet – steampunk style mining of foreign worlds!

Now, this little dude belongs to a game called Tannhauser.

If I’d been able to stay, this is one game I would have loved to try.

I mean, fighting zombiesque nazis alongside girls with dynamite? I can’t lose!

HK Bearded Dude Jeff runs Starcraft (on sale for something like $25)

Protoss came in yellow and orange…

Terrans came in red and blue, complete with girl gamers and huggable munchkins. Girl Gamers and Huggable Munchkins not available in all locations, check with your distributor.

While the Zerg came in green and purple… and REALLY wanted some chocolate.

And just to show that Warmachine/Hordes invades everything, a couple of the lads were playing in the store as well… Behold the Avatar of Menoth!

Accompanied by some beautifully painted Flameguard

And opposed by some Cryx, including this nifty Defiler Bonejack.

There are no moose around here.
