Thursday 13 #29: The Redheads of VS
September 17, 2008
Sure, last week’s T13 was a whole bunch of pics, but it’s been a while since I’ve done one based purely on VS card art. Time to get back in touch with our roots here at Lost Hemisphere, while simultaneously undertaking some fan service and giving the fanboys something to swoon over.
This week, Lost Hemisphere’s Thursday Thirteen is dedicated to those ever-lovely redheads of VS. As a special treat, I’m posting the full art rather than the card. It was a sod finding some of these pieces, but it makes for a very pretty T13.

1. Jean Grey. For many, Jean is the quintessential redhead in comics, the first one that comes to mind despite Rebecca Romjin’s body paint as Mystique in the X-Men movies. Extremely powerful, Jean has been a core figure in X-mythology since the very inception of the X-Men. |

2. Starfire. Just as Jean’s a core part of the X-Men, Starfire has been a mainstay of the Teen Titans for over a decade. Her character has lost a lot of its innocence over the years, but at her core, Koriand’r is all about passion and emotion. |

3. Natasha Rominoff. The original Black Widow, Natasha first appeared in the late 1960’s as a russian spy who defected to the west for her love of Clint Barton. Her character has matured over the years, but she has consistently been my favourite espionage character in comics. |

4. Boodikka. Okay, I know nothing about Boodikka at all, but I was just so darn thrilled to find this art. I love it. Love it love it love it. Many props to Chris Bachalo for his nifty art skills. |

5. Julia Carpenter. Not my favourite art of Julia/Spider-Woman/Arachne, but I couldn’t find the Andrew Robinson piece. Regardless, I love Julia’s character, struggling to balance the difficulties of being a single mother with her heroic tendencies. |

6. Lana Lang. Superman’s Smallville Sweetheart is beautifully captured in this piece by Phil Noto. And yes, you twits who only watched the TV show, she’s supposed to be a redhead. |

7. Tigra. Something for the furry fans out there, Greer Nelson’s not the deepest character in the pool, but she’s generally an entertaining read. I just wish she’d stop trying to blame instinctive behaviour on her feline nature – humans can be arrogant, impulsive and liscentious too, ya know. |

8. Barbara Gordon. Proving that brains are just as attractive as brawn, the wheelchair-bound Oracle has evolved a long way since her days in tights as Batgirl. |

9. Crystal. I confess, Crystal is far from my favourite Inhuman… but she has been kicking butt lately in Secret Invasion, and she had the gall to toss a drink in Gorgon’s face at the dinner table once. That’s gotta be worth something. |

10. Poison Ivy. When it comes to femme fatales, Ivy’s right up there with the best. I have to wonder how many teenage geeks developed an interest in botany, inspired by the thought of redheads in leafy one-pieces. |

11. U-Go-Girl. Edie Sawyer was so intensely flawed as a character, that it’s no wonder she became a fan favourite. Runaway teenage mom, dealing with her emotional grief through substance abuse, it’s not a huge surprise she touched a chord with teenage readers looking for something more “real”. |

12. Medusa. Now HERE’S a redhead for the ages. Queen of the Inhumans, Her Majesty Medusalith Amaquelin is one of my favourite things about comics. Go pick up the Jae Lee Inhumans TPB. Now. I demand it. |

13. Madelyne Pryor. Alright, this one’s pure fan service. Personally I don’t like the character of Madelyne Pryor, but I’d wager at least 8 out of 10 teenage male VS players would pick this art in their top 5 “hawt” VS cards. Meh. She’s just a clone of Jean Greay anyway |
Oh. and one for the girls…

RAWRRRR! WOW!! I’m getting a sense for why you like this game so much….
Heck, Claudia, I haven’t even posted a link in the T13 list yet! (*nice to have a fan*)
I’m a comic geek, but I never realized there were that many red-heads. Women in comics are usually brunettes.
Ann, this is less than half of the names we came up with from characters that have been printed in the VS card game alone (since all the above art – except for Banshee – comes from the cards). It’s amazing what you find when you dig. Maybe next week I’ll look for people with green hair or something
Those are some hot comic ladies! I might have to show this to my husband!
Happy TT!
I don’t know what game that is, but I do recognize many of the characters.
yay madelyne pryor!!! she’s the main reason why i love the underworld team
also, jean grey and poison ivy are favorites of mine too
Gotta love those comic strip gals!
My TT this is week is about the 13 Myths of Sarah Palin
