Cold shoulder for Cold Storage?

August 3, 2008

There’s been some discussion over at VSRealms lately regarding the value of Cold Storage. Is the card worth it? Does it have any real value? Can it make enough of a difference in a deck to make it worth playing?

Personally, I think so. Sure, it’s a kill-turn card, but no matter how you want to look at it, it saves you a character. Yes, at the cost of a resource, but if it’s your kill turn, what good’s that extra resource point going to do you anyway?

One point of the argument is that it brings the character back exhausted – no additional attacks, no exhausting to reinforce – the character’s just another body on the field now, but…

… what about using it do dodge uniqueness? Do it during the recovery phase and you’ll be down a resource for next turn but you’ll have two ready characters.

… what about using it to being back excellent defenders like the MODOC Squad to defend a critical character so that you can strike back when your attack step rolls around?

… and the one that seems most pertinent to me, what about those Leader effects? You don’t need to be ready to give a neighbouring character the benefit of Leader text, you just need to be there.

Storm Front Coming?

August 3, 2008

Marvel Evolution may be the best thing to happen to Halle Berry since she changed her name from Roberte Unglethorpe…. or it may just be another case of same ole’ same ole’.

I’m talking, of course, about Storm, the X-Men’s resident weather mistress.

Take a stroll down Storm’s VS history and you’ll see a recurring theme.

  • MOR 4-drop: Pay 2 END -> Your opponents lose flight.
  • MOR 6-drop: Your opponent’s support row can’t attack, you can move folks around at the start of combat.
  • MXM 4-drop: Leader: Neighbours evade for free.
  • MXM 6-drop: Leader: Neighbours get flight, and powered up when they enter combat with other fliers.
  • MXS 6-drop: Your folks get flight
  • MVL 6-drop: Your guys get flight; activate -> Your opponents dudes lose flight.
  • MUN 4-drop: Boost, replace a resource: Your dudes get flight, your opponents lose it.

With the exception of the MXM 4-drop, a card which represents Storm’s tenure as ruler of the Morlocks (also a time in which I think she was powerless), every single bloody incarnation of Storm in the game is based around wind. She lifts your guys up, she pushes your opponents down.

My thought here is: Since when is weather only about air movement?

If Wishes were Fishes

August 3, 2008

Atlanteans make out in the funnest ways.

The biggest problem about being a VS blogger is, occasionally the powers that be at UDE actually read the darn blog, and then they give me what I’m asking for, and then I have to figure out what to do with it.

I’m talking of Legend stuff for characters that are no doubt worthy of legendary status, but haven’t been given a full feature to date, most likely because their “team” hasn’t been primary in an expansion since the Legend stuff started rolling out.

In particular, UDE’s R&D team came forth with Legend stuff for Dr Strange (originally opined about here) and Namor (originally opined about here). They also gave us Silent War for Black Bolt, which also makes me giddy, but I haven’t written a post in the past bemoaning the lack of Black Bolt Legend stuff, so I’ll put that aside for now… though I make no promises that I won’t demand more Black Bolt goodness in future.
