Family Feud: Molten

July 20, 2008

Welcome back to Lost Hemisphere’s Family Feud, where we put the members of the Fantastic Four against each other for no reason other than we can ;)

Today’s match, the fourth of six, is between the playboy prankster Johnny Storm, and the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed idol o’ millions himself, Benjamin J Grimm.

On with the show!

Ben wins initiative, and opts for Odds – Sure, his 7-drop works better on evens, but the three and five slots are just owned by his bulging rocky biceps.

I know I’m supposed to be taking a break but…

July 17, 2008

Hot damn!

  • MUN? Being reprinted.
  • MEV? Existence clarified by box art.
  • Gen Con? Schedule listed.
  • Hobby League? Cards displayed.
  • Fin Fang Foom Mat? …

… I just wet myself at the sheer geektasticness.

Also adding to the niftiness, the Bear’s finally cut the cord and broken away from the Dwarf. Take a peek out our cuddly widdle ursine making his own little nest in the blogosphere. Huzzah!

Quiet contemplation

July 16, 2008

Real life (yes, it’s not just a rumour) has dumped a metric craptonne of stuff on my lap that has to be resolved over the next few days, so regrettably I’m not going to be able to make any obscenely wordy posts probably until the weekend at the earliest. This may also result in a delay on the conclusion of this week’s caption contest, and it most certainly rules out a Thursday Thirteen from me this week.

I suggest you take this time to look within yourselves and to quietly contemplate the mysteries of the universe – Why are we here? Why do rainbows curve? Is it conceivable to make a deck that can actually utilise Starlord?

On my return I do promise a Family Feud match, and the announcement of a new contest of some sort to get your creativity flowing.

Hobby League: Educating Liam

July 16, 2008

We had planned to play Dual Legend decks tonight, with a moritorium on Family of Four, Worlds Finest, and other such “designed to be” dual legend legal decks, but things being as they are, we were promptly derailed by the arrival of young Liam, who turned up hoping to play some LotR (the miniatures game by Games Workshop).

Never the type to let an oppotunity slip through our fingers, we pounced on this poor unsuspecting lad and promptly began his corruption by tossing an Avengers team attack deck into his grubby little mitts.

it was interesting comparing tutorial styles, as I played him (while Spud and Pablo played), then Pablo played him (while Spud and I played), and then Spud played him (while Pablo and I played).

Needless to say, handing a neophyte player a Warbound control deck is not a good thing, even if he DOES say Hulk is his favourite character. Hopefully Spud has learned his lesson :) .

During the week I’m going to toss together a care package for our budding new cardflopper, and we’ll see if he turns up next week ready to take us on again.

Analepsis: Metallic Assault

July 14, 2008

by Flashback

[Note: If this entire article may seem a bit rushed, it’s because that it actually is a bit rushed. I agreed last minute to help Spud meet this deadline, only to realise how much writing was actually involved with less than 24 hours to write it in. My style may be a bit more cavalier and less design oriended than Spud’s usual writing, but I hope you like it none-the-less.]

In one of his letter columns, Stan Lee was once asked if he had realised that while creating the Fantastic Four, that he had inadvertently based their four powers on the four primal elements – Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. Lee replied simply that it had never come to mind, but indeed, Mr. Fantastic’s fluid shape, Invisible Woman’s etheral invisibility, Thing’s stony countenance, and Human Torch’s…well, fieriness, did perfectly embody the classical elements of nature.

One would like to think that UDE had tapped into this design mentality as well, when they released the Versus system, with it’s four types of cards: Characters, red like fire, dealing damage to those who dare cross them. Plot Twists, ocean blue effects in both flowing and bottled (Ongoing) form. Locations, solid and enduring, durable and steady. Equipment, rarely seen, yet always sustaining and supporting fiery characters. Some may see these allegories as a bit of a stretch, but indeed it is these four elements that make up the game, and each and every card interacts with these components throughout the game.

j’accuse!

Random splash for the win!

Since getting the necessary pieces, Spud’s had a right royal time playing with his Illuminati, and getting the turn 5 Infinity Gauntlet lock off. It’s a real pain in the proverbial, I’ll tell you that, even if it doesn’t win him every game (first time he managed to do it, he still lost due to Master Man flying over and kicking Professor X every turn).

Tonight, as part of our regular Sunday Night Shenanigans, Spud’s Illuminati faced off against my Skrulls.

Normally, not a bad matchup for the Illuminati, but me being the terrible deckbuilder that I am, I’m prone to splash stuff that wouldn’t otherwise go in a deck.

Fizzle…

July 13, 2008

No, not the plot twist, but rather, an eight-legged cat thingie that can split into four felines… according to Blockade Boy, at least ;)

One of the joys of teh modern interwebs is strolling through random blogs and seeing what eventuates. I sporadically visit Blockade Boy’s blog, and was entertained by the inception of these creatures. In particular, the description of Fizzle brought to mind Spud’s frequent reliance on drunken hobos.

Say “hi” to Fizzle! Fizzle Aqua has mind-control powers, so you don’t even have to bother with buying food or changing the litter box. That’s what the zombie hobos are for. Fizzle Yellow shoots lighting! (Surge protector sold separately.) Fizzle Pink can walk through walls and fall through floors! And not onto your table in the middle of important meetings with your press agent! Nope! Fizzle Purple has super-speed! Try putting Fizzle Purple on a treadmill hooked up to a generator, and watch your power bills plummet!

MUN Online: The Eve of Destruction

July 11, 2008

Every once in a while someone comes up with an idea and actually has the gumption to go through with it. This time around, the tip of the hat goes to Flashback, who has actually gone and set up an online MUN tourney, working out all the packs, rallying up players, and all that jazz.

For his dedication to the game we love, and for actually doing something about it, I hereby declare Flashback to be honorarilly Lost (*applauds*).

And then, a resounding kick in the pants for suckering me into playing in an online tourney, knowing full well how much I suck at sealed (*shakes fist*).

Green Tiger’s in da Hood

July 11, 2008

Worlds came and went without the Crime Lords making a big splash in the Top 8. Since I’m clearly living in denial, it MUST be because they’re biding their time as they bring their insidious plot to fruition, those wacky Crime Lords.

In the meantime, VSRealms member Green Tiger did in fact craft some Crime Lords goodness to take to the big leagues. Some careful prodding with a plastic fork, and he’s given up the goods.
