BYOT seeping into Hobby League

July 8, 2008

We were going to play some Super Crossover Sealed tonight, but ended up playing some three-player shenanigans because, well, that’s the kind of malarkey that Spud, Pablo and I get up to.

While we’re patiently waiting for the BYOT kit to turn up, it’s no surprise that our thoughts start to drift towards just what we can play. For myself, this isn’t such a big deal because, well, almost every deck I build is BYOT legal. I rarely toolbox, I occasionally team up, but I’d say 80-90% of my decks are mono-affiliated and rely heavilly on their stamped stuff.

That’s just how I roll.

So now the question is, what should I play for BYOT. Do I go back to my beloved Fantastic Four? Do I try out X-Men? Darkseid’s Elite serves me well, and we’re once more looking at a format where my Morlocks are legal, as are my beloved (and much-maligned Manhunters). Marvel Knights are a force to be reckoned with, Kree retain all the tricks I normally use, Inhumans have oomph, I could even go back and look at Defenders and try for that Dr Strange Legend deck I’ve been wanting to build.

… well, once my trade from Kamiza arrives, since it has three Essence Of Zom in there for me. Yay Steve!

I’m going to take Avengers off the table for now since I’m still a ways from getting all the stuff I want/need from MUN for them, but there’s always the Crime Lords as well, if I can settle on a build for them…

Oh, the indecision!

  1. I have a question: does BYOT prevent the use of Legend cards, since it requires all effects to either be generic or team-stamped? Essence of Zom isn’t stamped to any team, but it requires a particular character to be in play, so does it still qualify as generic? I realize it’s a stupid query, but I just want to confirm, thank you!

  2. Essence of Zom doesn’t specify a team at all, so it’s generica. The rule for BYOT is that it must specify your team, or have no team at all.

  3. I’d give X-Men a whirl just for something different. Whether or not you go with the MXM set, I hear the mutant traits possibilities are quite good. Besides I’ve played against an energy deck and it wasn’t pretty i can tell you.

  4. There’s a LOT of X-Men stuff out there to play with, and a lot of alternatives. I do like the Mutant Energy deck…
