Thursday 13 #13: Glimpse of Reality
April 30, 2008
It’s the thirteenth Thursday Thirteen. That means I’ve thus far spent twelve weeks rambling on about VS and comic characters, but at no point actually given you anything of substance.
For the Thirteenth edition, i thought I’d change that, and actually show you something real.
You see, the number 13 has always been, for lack of a better term, lucky for me. Odd, considering its usual reputation, but there you have it. As such, I think it’s only fitting that we celebrate this most auspiscious list with a little something special.
I’m blessed to have in my life a lovely and talented wife. She’s a digital warrior, her weapon of choice having a lens and a shutter and a whole bunch of widgets I won’t even pretend to understand. If she tells me the ISO’s too high, I just smile and nod. One day I’ll learn, but for now the magical world of photography is as alien to me, as the world of VS is to her.
Today’s listing, I offer for your viewing pleasure thirteen examples of her talent. Enjoy.

1: Belly photos are always cute… getting the future sibling in there just makes it all the more touching.

2: This one’s actually Gdayboy and I at the zoo, whistling (or in his case, trying to) at a parrot. I love my little boy…

3: My 34th birthday cake. Again, with my little sidekick there to assist, since obviously my lungs are failing me in my old age
. These are the things memories are made of.

4: It can be a challenge working out how best to pose someone whose muscle strength can’t even support thier own arms yet… but when you get a harlequin chair, you gotta run with it.

5: Nothing says “pregnancy shoot” like sitting topless in the middle of a creek in a public park at dusk. One to remember, non?

6: Anyone can pose a bride and groom, but marrying the crisp beauty of a wedding dress with an alley and a drool-fest waiting to happen? Not something you just see every day.

7: The colour in this one is what caught my eye. I don’t know what’s funkier, the blue fence or the orange specs.

8: Again with an abnormal wedding pic… “Excuse me, Bride, I know your dress cost a fortune, but would you mind laying on the ground for a few moments?”

9: Is this thing ripe for a speech bubble or what???

10: Beauty is where you find it, even in front of a graffiti-covered wall.

11: Gdaygirl is the light of my life… and right now, for no clear reason, that chapeau is her reason for being.

12: On your wedding day, life seems to fly past while you’re lost in the moment.

13: … okay, I really don’t have anything to say about this one other than “Awwwwww!”
The thing I love about looking over my wife’s photographs is that they somehow join a completely distinct fantasy reality, with the true reality in which we spend our days. Somehow, the perfectly ordinary becomes something almost otherwordly, while at the same time staying true to its essence.
It’s reality, but viewed through the most amazing pair of eyes.
Thank you for taking the time to meander through the list, next week I promise I’ll get back to trading card games…
… but it’s nice to look beyond every once in a while, right?

I love the photography and how everything is captured in perfect lighting for each. She’s a great photographer.
Simply breathtaking. Kudo’s to your wife and to you for sharing her work.
Happy T13!
OMG, she’s INCREDIBLE. Does she do portraits? If the guy I’m eyeing for my author shots doesn’t work out, I know who to call!
These are truly amazing. Wow. I am absolutely speechless. I cannot imagine having such a talent. Hurray for Patti – and the man who loves her.
13 has always been a lucky number for my family too. This year will mark our 13th wedding anniversary.
All of the photographs are lovely but my two favorites are the giraffe and your daughter in the hat.
Happy TT.
Beautiful pictures! 13 has always seemed pretty lucky to me too, or at least it hasn’t been notably unlucky!
Thanks for sharing, and thanks for stopping by!
Your wife has a wonderful eye, those are beautiful!
Some beautiful shots there. A real talent.
Thanks, so much. I really needed this today. My head is throbbing from a rough night of hockey party, and these are so soothing in their beauty.
This week was the first week I missed TT in over four months, but you made up for it with this.
You are so blessed to share a soul with such a talented human. Congratulations.
#6 is my favorite of these beautiful photos. I think because we can make up our own scenarios about how the couple and the pooch came together at that moment. Drawing a viewer in — that’s what good photographers do, isn’t it? Thanks for sharing, and thanks for visiting my TT.
#3 is an amazing picture, what a beautiful way to capture a moment. #12 takes my breath away, I LOVE that picture! All of these are simply incredible.
Those pictures are just breathtaking. Your wife has some mad skillz!
Beautiful pictures ! very artistic !!
*grinning from ear to ear with a little bit of blushing thrown in* Thank you all for the lovely complements, and thanks love for starring my stuff on your 13th TT
My pleasure, hon. I love your work, it’s only fitting that I share it with my peeps.

She is truly amazing. She really knows how to tell a story with a photograph. Beautiful, and thanks for sharing. I love her unconventional wedding photos.
My TT is up, too. http://casadecruz.blogspot.com/
WOW and thank you to you and wife and family for sharing such beauty!
Your wife is quite gifted behind the lens. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite, but the standouts were: the pregnancy pic in the creek, the two of you next to the blue fence, you and your son w/ your b-day cake, and the one with your daughter looking very snazzy in her green cap. Thanks for sharing these.
