Hobby League: Keeping with the theme

April 8, 2008

Just a quick post tonight, I’m afraid.

For a change we had no theme this week, just open decks. After the shenanigans of March Madness, it was nice to just play… whatever… Heh. So of course, in keeping with Crime Lords Month, I played… Crime Lords! I know you’re surprised…

I actually played a deck using the fantasy cards we’ve featured here on Lost Hemisphere recently – Gladiator, the the three Enforcers, and Stilt-Man.

Round one was against Shadowpact, and Montana did an admirable job of keeping Gladiator available for attacking shenanigans for several rounds. Kingpin: Overboss rolled out, but in the end June Moon spelled doom for my organised mobsters, especially after Ox was so rudely shoved into the hidden area. Blackbriar Thorn got big and scary (something like +12/+12 in the end), but it’s really amazing what the threat of a couple of Face The Masters and a Marked For Death can do. In the end it wasn’t enough, and I took a loss. At least it was against the Eponymous Pablo, whose manly beard is an inspiration to us all.

Second game was against the Green Lantern Corps, piloted by a brand spankin’ new Hobby Leaguer; I’ll try to have a witty nickname for him next week. His deck’s pretty much slapped together from GLC C/UC’s, so in all honesty there was only so much he could expect from it, but he still managed to keep pace until Kingpin came out again, followed by Kirigi. Kirigi opened the door for Kingpin to stomp on poor little Rot Lop Fan, so despite Ch’p boosting everyone’s defences, the Lanterns just couldn’t do enough damage to seal the deal. Missing your 5 and 6 will do that to you, I’m afraid.

Third game, Gamerette and her Underworld. I once again hit a pretty smooth draw, fueled in no small part by Roscoe Sweeney keeping the curve smooth and filtering out no-longer-needed drops from the deck. Marked For Death was probably the MVP card of the game for me, constantly targetting her strongest character and thus making for a lovely assortment of stunbacks. The deck sure needs a couple of extra attack pumps, but the defensive stuff… well, there’s plenty in there, I just wasn’t drawing much by way of Duty Calls or Burn Rubbers. Enough to get by, but it’s not like there was a comfortable level of reinforcement on my side. Still, I took the win on this one.

In the end, I’m sad to report that Spud’s redesigned Stilt-Man didn’t hit the board once. Bah.
