Stu-Vivor finals: OSM Fantasy Cards

March 1, 2008

And with that, my Finals entry for Stu-Vivor is complete! Five cards dedicated to OrangeSodaMan, as requried by my end of the challenge.

I’ll confess that I’m not as familiar with OrangeSodaMan as I am with some of the other posters on VSRealms, so for inspiration for the cards I turned to a) his name, b) his making it all the way through Stu-Vivor to be my final opponent.

Enough ramblings - cards!

Contents Under Pressure

Orange Soda Man : Contents Under Pressure.

OrangeSodaMan proved tougher to knock out of the competition than the other entrants, standing tall on the shoulders of his previous entries and refusing to bow before my awesomeness ;)

To represent this, OSM: CUP (abbreviation not intentional, but amusing nonetheless) gets bigger the longer he’s in the game - the more copies he’s managed to get out of his deck, the stronger he is!

Considering there’ll be a max of 8 OSM’s in the deck, and to make use of some of the cards below he’ll be actively removing them from the game, this version in the early game should rarely be larger than a very healthy 6/6 on turn 3, though in later turns he’ll potentially be significantly larger… but still vulnerable to everything that targets 3-drops.

 Orange Soda Man: Carbonated Crimefighter

This one was inspired directly from a quote on OSM’s Facebook.
“Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely” - author unknown

Based on that I wanted a Reset-style effect, and to tie it in with the rest of the OSM cards, it’s fed by removing an OSM from the KO pile. In other words, you can reset combats just dandy, but doing so will weaken your 3-drops (if you have any in play) and your chances to use Fizzy Bubbles. A potentially powerful effect, but using it has ramifications.

I’m not 100% certain of the stats; the reset effect is quite strong, so I’m wary of creating a card that’s too powerful by having a strong effect tied in with too-high stats… besides, he IS only made of aluminium…

 Vending Machine

One thing about cans… there’s a heck of a lot of them out there.

As much as our dear OrangeSodaMan is a unique individual, I wanted to be able to spam them out as an army-esque effect, while not actually having to make an army version (since limiting it to four copies of any one OSM keeps the 3-drop and the plot twists from being overpowered).

Vending Machine allows the player to get multiple OSM’s in play, thus not having to give up all his tough 3-drops in order to use the 7, and making underdropping two 3-drops on turn 6 a viable option.

Fizzy Bubbles

Ah, peurile humour for the win… Everyone knows that when you chug a carbonated beverage you get a tummy-ache, a heck of a belch, or both.

The idea behind this one is that the opposing characters have been enjoying that sweet, sweet orangey goodness, and just when they try to do that Flying Kick, their wracked with pain from gas buildup. Just when they want to yell that Rallying Cry, the burp right in the middle of it.

This is the least original piece of art for the five cards, it doesn’t even feature OSM himself, but heck, I just wanted to tie in to the flavour text, so Zatanna had to feature.

Recyclable

I mentioned earlier that cans are aluminium… they’re recyclable, and as such, so should our dear OrangeSodaMan be.

This has the added bonus of reflecting his online presence on VSRealms - you might kick him, stomp on him, crush him flat, but he’ll come right back.

He’s a resilient little sod, as further evidenced by his making it into the Stu-Vivor finals… and good on ‘im!

Aaaand… that’s it! OrangeSodaMan should be posting his final portions sometime over the next few days and then it comes down to the voting - who will crowned King of the Realms???

Why, my dear voting public, it’s up to you. Vox Populi!!!!!

Your awesome-ness is beyond reproach good sir.

  4. While I love the “injured” OSM on Recyclable, Vending Machine’s my fave for art and flavour as well. Heh.
