Hobby League: What’s in the box???
February 19, 2008Next week we hold our DCL Build-A-Legend event. I’ve been vacillating back and forth regarding which deck to run. So, what’s the smartest thing to do at Hobby League, my last chance to do any real testing?
DLS draft!!!!!

Nothing says playtesting like drafting from an older set!
CaptainSpud had picked up two boxes of DLS from CoolStuffInc at a reasonable price, and brought them with him to engage in cardy shenanigans. The obvious thing to do was to split into pods, draft ‘em out, and see what we ended up with.
For the record, both boxes yielded a Mobilize, so Spud got his money’s worth right there…
After some heady drafting I was actually able to put together a Darkseid’s Elite deck, with only a couple of non DE characters splashed in where my drops were light.

The deck was:
-
1x Apokoliptian Zealots
-
1x Parademon Elite
-
1x Director Bones
-
1x Malice Vundabar
-
1x Saturn Queen
-
2x Dark Thanagarian
-
1x Dark Firestorm
-
1x Lashina
-
1x Darkseid (4)
-
2x Dark Martian
-
1x Stompa
-
1x Darkseid (5)
-
1x Dark Warrior
-
1x Darkseid (6)
-
1x Dark Champion
-
1x Kara Zor-EL @ Supergirl
-
1x Price of Treason
-
2x Furnaces of Apokolips
-
1x Titans of Tomorrow
-
1x Substitute Heroes
-
1x Dark Fury
-
1x Mobilize
-
1x Shock & Awe
-
1x Servants of Darkness
-
1x Omega Effect
-
1x Ancient Evils
-
1x Contact
So with the exception of a couple of off-team splashes at 2, we’re pure DE. We have two search cards (Mobilize and Titans of Tomorrow), draw effects (Dark Firestorm, Darkseid4, Furnaces of Apokolips), a smattering of pumps, and some stuff to tie in with the opponents-face-down-resources stuff.
The plus here is that a lot of this stuff kinda sorta hooks in to what I’m thinking for the Darkseid Legend deck, so I’m not exactly ignoring my playtesting… right???
First round I paired up with Gamerette and her Titans/Legionnaires deck. I really hate to say it, but it wasn’t much of a challenge – Gamerette drew horribly. Missed drops all over the place meant I was able to maintain momentum and methodically walk all over her heroes with my evil gits. 1-0.
Second round was almost a mirror match. Jeremy had drafted Darkseids Elite as well, though he’d splashed Future Foes through the mess as well. This game was highly amusing as we went back and forth. It really could have been anyones game – Our fives stunned each other, only to have them both removed from the game when we both played Omega Beams, exhausting our 4-drops to do so. We recruited the same 6. We recruited the same 7. In the end though, not having a team-up meant that Tharok was a breakthrough magnet for turns 6 and 7, and it gave me enough of a lead to clinch the victory. 2-0
Third round was the mighty Pablo, devourer of small pastries. He’d slapped together a Future Foes deck, and for once I didn’t hit my optimal characters or any of my search. Well, not 100% true, I did hit Mobilize, but I had Saturn Queen on the board and couldn’t use it till I could suicide her, and with Validus and Tharok on the opposite side of the board, it had to wait until I could throw her at Starfinger. In the end, though, it was that bloody Computo that cost me the game. Four times he was able to stun one of my toons, and then use Computo to recover and burn me, rather than just letting me recover to the Fatal Five effects. 2-1
Pablo, undefeated, walked away with Thank Granny Goodness, a card that may well have been useful for my Darkseid legend deck… though I’m thinking it’ll be even more use in a DE/Kree deck… RONAN!!!!!!!
On the plus side, I got my first DCL Charaxes, and picked up a foil Indestructible to dangle in front of anyone working on Superman. Like Gamerette.
I leave you with this query:
If you could commission character art from any one VS artist, who would it be, and what would the character be?

Muah ha ha ha!!! Beaten by the Future Foes!!!
