Angels in the Outfield…
January 19, 2008Once again taking inspiration from Stuby, there’s been talk of angels and their impact on our lives lately. Are they real? Do they actively intervene on our behalf with a divine being of some sort? Do they taste like parmesan cheese? Given the choice, would they prefer coke or pepsi?
All personal beliefs aside, there’s more than a few angels in the VS system - the most obvious being the X-Men’s resident winged mutie, Warren Worthington. So, since I’m all about decks that are assembled on a whim and just for fun, let’s look at what sort of angelic theme deck we can put together!

A quick check through the filters of VSed (available for download at both VSRealms and TheKamiza), or even the magnificent docx’s search engine, gives us a few options right off the bat for characters…
-
MOR001 Archangel: Warren Worthington III -2
-
MSM103 Archangel: Angel of Death -5
-
MXM001 Archangel: Angel -1
-
MTU044 Archangel: New Defender -1
-
MVL001 Archangel: Aeroballistic -4
Now let’s open up the field to the other angels to give us a few more options.
-
MMK020 Mikado and Mosha: Angels of Destruction -1
-
MXM042 Angel Dust: Adrenaline Junkie -1
-
DCR065 The Phantom Stranger: Fallen Angel -7
-
DJL026 Zauriel: Guardian Angel -3
-
MVL126 Punisher: Angel of Death -7
So, breaking it down by curve we have four one-drops, one 2-drop, one 3-drop, one 4-drop, one 5-drop, and two 7-drops.
We’re not talking curve deck here. That’d require something at 6, and more options at 2, 3 and 4. With a whole bunch of X-Men stamped characters at the low end of the curve, X-Men Assemble could make a handy little X-Babies deck, but with so many Archangels, uniqueness would kill us. To where do we turn? Crisis! Yay!
… tell me you didn’t see that coming. The downside if, of course, all those nifty X-Baby supporting plot twists that specifically target X-Men characters are now useless to us.
We’re still looking at weenies, since we’re so heavy on the low-end of the curve. Last thing we want to do is go to the late game, so lets pretend the 7-drops don’t exit and toss in some Rigged Explosives to try to help bring about our opponent’s demise before the late game kills us.
We’re looking at a lot of low stat weenies, so we need to counteract the damage we’ll be taking with either reinforcement/stunbacks, or endurance gain. Stuff like Crowd Control (if we run New Mutations to make sure everyone has range), Burn Rubber and Nasty Surprise take care of the first option for us.
Birthing Chamber will reward us for having lots of little dudes, and since we’re running the 1-drop Archangel from MXM, we may as well toss an X-Corp: Paris to add slight filtering to the deck.
We’re lacking a little in punch still, so slipping in some basic combat pumps is a good idea. Mega-Blast adds a nice punch for our guys in the back row, and Lord knows there’s plenty of other options.
And, just to help us get get more Angel Dusts into play, we’ll take Kevin Sidney into account… Changeling. Yes, it’s cheap, but I make no excuses. NONE!!!
Angelic Host
-
4x Archangel: Angel
-
2x Archangel: New Defender
-
4x Changeling: Kevin Sidney
-
4x Angel Dust: Adrenaline Junkie
-
4x Archangel: Warren Worthington III
-
4x Zauriel: Avenging Angel
-
4x Archangel: Aeroballistic
-
4x Archangel: Angel of Death
-
4x Crisis on Infinite Earths
-
4x Mobilize
-
2x Enemy of my Enemy
-
3x Birthing Chamber
-
1x X-Corp Paris: X-Corp
-
4x Rigged Explosives
-
4x Burn Rubber
-
4x Nasty Surprise
-
4x Big Leagues
Turn one, you want to drop a Rigged Explosives in the row.
Turn two, if you have an Angel Dust and Changeling as alternatives to a second Archangel, drop another Rigged Explosives. If you need to put down more Archangels, toss down that Crisis and start assembling the host.
In the end you’re hoping to block your opponent’s assault through reinforcement and Nasty Surprises, punch back with Big Leagues, and blow ‘em up with Rigged Explosives.
Competitive? (*snrk*) Consistent? (*snicker*)
An amusing concept anyway? Sure!
I’m far from the best deckbuilder around (as evidence, go back and read the rest of this article), so if the idea amuses you, then by all means - pick up the ball and run with it!

Too much fun. I need to link this in my next article.
You want a blog-read trade, you got it :).
That has got to be the most amusing thematic goofy deck I’ve seen in my time running about the Vs. System world. Only thing I would say it needs is some copies of Teamwork to help try and grab Crisis so Angel can start assembling his “heavenly host” sooner.
Oh, and if you want more weenies with technicality names along the lines of Changeling, then Unus, ANGELo Unuscione and White Tiger, ANGELa Del Toro can be put into the 2-drop slot.
Yup, I spotted Unus and Angela while checking to see what was available as well, but in the end I cut them for not being Angelic enough. Changeling only made it in for being so incredibly useful.
This is pretty much an indicator of how I like to build fun decks - come up with a goofy theme and run with it. Heck, a couple of times now our hobby league has had theme nights were the decks were assembled purely based on the art on the cards.
The last such deck I ran was Blue Man Group - every card had a blue skinned individual. The Kree were good to me that night… RONAN!!!!!
